On January 17, 1990, at the age of 88, Sidney N. Shure joined the luminaries of rock and roll when his handprints and signature were added to Hollywood’s RockWalk® on Sunset Boulevard in Hollywood, California. The RockWalk is a museum and sidewalk gallery that recognizes performers, innovators, and manufacturers who have made significant contributions to rock and roll. The gallery features honoree handprints and signatures embedded in terrazzo.
The gallery began in 1985 and is supported by Guitar Center and the City of Los Angeles. All inductees are chosen by secret ballot by past honorees. Those voting in 1990, when Mr. Shure was honored, included B.B. King, Carol King, and Chuck Berry.
As Mr. Shure was unable to join the other 1990 inductees in casting their terrazzo prints at the gallery, three representatives from Guitar Center came to Shure: CEO Larry Thomas, Los Angeles General Manager Don Kelsey, and Chicago District Manager George Lampos. They arrived with two molds Joining rock and roll legends and 150 pounds of terrazzo. A space was provided in the Shure Molding Department, where the terrazzo was mixed and poured into the molds. The molds were carried into a conference room, where Mr. Shure made “a lasting impression.”
The molds were flown back to Los Angeles for the induction ceremony. The four inductees who joined Mr. Shure on the RockWalk in 1990 were performer Todd Rundgren; Harold Rhodes, inventor of the first electric piano; Hartley Peavey, founder and President of Peavey Electronics; and Henry Z. Steinway, President and Chairman of Steinway & Sons.
Hollywood’s RockWalk inductees include Aerosmith, Ginger Baker, Black Sabbath, Johnny Cash, Dick Clark, Bo Diddley, The Doobie Brothers, Willie Dixon, Leo Fender, Marvin Gaye, Jimi Hendrix, Buddy Holly, B.B. King, Little Richard, Keith Moon, Ozzy Osbourne, Roy Orbison, Les Paul, Elvis Presley, John Lee Hooker, The Moody Blues, Phil Ramone, Smoky Robinson, and Van Halen.
