Shure’s 75th anniversary was a joyous expression of pride in past achievements and a declaration of confidence in the future. With events held throughout the year and across continents, the anniversary celebrations included all Shure plants and offices, generations of Associates and their families, Sales Representatives, Distribution Center principals and Distributors, endorsing artists, customers, and guests. It was a celebration that reflected the character of one of the audio industry’s most enduring companies, and it brought out the deep affection that is felt for Shure around the world.
“Shure has always celebrated the anniversary of the Company. It is a tradition that was started by Mr. Shure long ago,” noted Chairman Rose L. Shure. “The focus of our celebration was to share our happiness with our Associates and their families as well as the organizations and individuals who had become closely related by working with us over the years.”
On the Company’s 25th anniversary, in 1950, Shure employees were treated to coffee and pastries in the morning. Lunch and dessert were served at noon, with Mr. Shure and the Division Managers donning aprons to serve the dessert. Following these events, Mr. Shure headed back to his office and learned that a plant meeting was scheduled for later in the day. Although it was unusual that such a meeting would be called without his authorization, he attended without question and found himself the guest of honor at a surprise party planned by employees. He was presented with a 25-year anniversary pin by the president of one of Shure’s oldest customers, a gold watch from employees, and an employee donation to the Association of Family Living, of which Mr. Shure was a director. Then telegrams of good wishes were read. They had arrived throughout the day from suppliers, customers, friends, and organizations—even from the mayor of Chicago and the governor of Illinois.
Inviting all to join in the celebration
Shure kicked off the public celebration of its 75th anniversary at the National Systems Contractors Association (NSCA) Expo 2000 in Las Vegas, which began on April 29. A Shure-sponsored party drew hundreds for a concert and a special appearance by Blue Man Group, a popular theater performance ensemble.
Starting in late May, a series of 75th anniversary events in every Shure facility brought all Associates, their families, and special guests into the fun. It started on May 21 in Heilbronn, Germany, where Shure Europe Associates attended a cabaret night at the Altes Theater. They and their guests enjoyed cocktails, an Italian buffet, and performances by two rock bands.
The following week, on May 27, halfway around the world, the six Associates of Shure Asia and their spouses celebrated by chartering a boat and cruising along the eastern islands of Hong Kong. During the day, the group enjoyed swimming, sunning, playing mahjong, and a festive lunch. After catching only five squid and one eel, however, the group chose to dine at the Tung Kee Seafood Restaurant in the fishing village of Sai Jung.
The next day, May 28, Associates in Juarez, Mexico, and El Paso, Texas, and their families celebrated at a private ranch and park. They enjoyed a full day of swimming, volleyball, a Mariachi band, and Folklorico dancers, followed by dinner.
On June 3, attention turned to Illinois, where one of the largest parties in Shure history was held at Ravinia Park, a beautiful outdoor festival facility north of Chicago. Nearly 2,000 people, including Associates, their families, long-service retirees, and guests attended a daylong party, which included a lavish buffet, games, brief welcoming speeches by Mrs. Shure and Mr. LaMantia, and a concert with performances by Buddy Guy and Rockapella.
Later that month, on June 24, Associates in Agua Prieta, Mexico, and Douglas, Arizona, and their families partied at the Paraiso 2000 Salon. Among the more than 1,000 people who attended the party were the mayor and chief of police of Agua Prieta. The day included a special meal prepared by the chef of the Agua Prieta cafeteria, music performed by three bands, dance contests, and games for the children.
Shure continued celebrating throughout 2000 and into early 2001 with a three-day International Distribution Center/Distributor event in Chicago and Evanston and anniversary programs at trade shows.
